Essay
In 1852, Giovanni Battista Lombardi went to Rome to study at the Academy of San Luca with the sculptor Pietro Tenerani. His works are very diverse: from portraits to funerary and public monuments, up to works on mythological and historical-biblical subjects. Several of his sculptures are kept in Brescia, in Bologna and in Rome. Other works are in private collections, and some others are represented in the US and Australia. One of the artist's most recognizable works is the Biblical character Ruth. She is usually represented with the shives of corn and his studio produced it on a number of occasions. A single figure of Ruth was sold at Sotheby's New York in 2008.
